…A National Survey of Mother’s Attitudes on Fathering
-National Fatherhood Initiative
“93% of the respondents to the mothers survey agreed (67% strongly) that there is a father-absence crisis in the United States today.”
1. The mother’s appraisals of the performance of fathers differed greatly according to whether or not the mother was married to or lived with the father. The mothers who lived with the fathers, including those cohabiting but not married, gave overwhelming high marks to the fathers, while those mothers not living with fathers reported, on average, extremely negative views.
2. Despite an overall favorable evaluation of fathers by the married and cohabitating mothers, a majority of them agreed that they could achieve a better work-family balance if the fathers provided more support.
3. The mothers not living with the fathers reported very low satisfaction with the fathers who had taken on new romantic, marital, or stepfather relationships. With each additional relationship or responsibility, the survey shows, these mothers were progressively less satisfied with the father’s parenting.
To be sure mother’s perceptions of the fathers of their children differ with a marked correlation to whether Mom and Dad are “together”. Mothers agree “Dads are important”.
